Activities for Everyone

New! Half mile nature trail just added to Heritage.Withlacoochee State Trail

One of the advantages to making Heritage your home is the endless activities that surround the area. Why pay high association fees for high priced amenities when they are just minutes away.

Over 20 golf courses and country clubs surround the area. Join the one of your choice or just pay as you play.

In addition to golfing in Citrus County, the outdoor activities are numerous including boating, canoeing, kayaking, jet skiing, scuba diving, snorkeling, fishing both saltwater and fresh water, hiking, biking and horseback riding just to name a few. For those that enjoy shopping, there is the new Heritage Hills shopping plaza right next door and just down the street is a Publix Grocery Store, Walgreens Pharmacy, Suntrust Bank, Blockbuster Video, Burger King, a Chinese restaurant, Quiznos Subs, a dentist, a medical clinic, a salon and day spa, a dry cleaner and a gas station all within walking distance.

Enjoy life in a section of Florida that will not be over developed. The fact is that approximately 40% of Citrus County is designated as public land and therefore cannot be developed. Be sure to explore the Withlacoochee State Trail, which is part of the Florida Greenways. It runs through the entire length of Citrus County and beyond. The trail is paved for hiking, biking and rollerskating (see rails to trails), and parts of the trail are accompanied by a horseback riding trail, as well.

This vast amount of pristine, undisturbed land consists largely of wetlands, wildlife preserves, bird sanctuaries, state forests, parks and recreation areas.

Bird watching is also popular here and Citrus County's 18 birding trails are part of the West Section of the Great Florida Birding Trail.

Of particular interest to mention are the following recreational destinations: Crystal River Archaeological State ParkWithlacoochee State ForestChassahowitzka National Wildlife Refuge, The Homosassa State Wildlife Park, and the Crystal River Wildlife Refuge.

Many of the local dive shops that dot the area around King's Bay and the Crystal River offer boat rentals with or without a guide, scuba gear rentals and scuba certification classes or you can rent snorkeling gear and observe the manatees.

People travel from all over to experience the grace and beauty of these gentle, giant sea cows, once mistaken for mermaids. Many of the dive shops offer manatee tours and the opportunity to swim with the manatees.

Swim with the Florida Manatee

The nearby towns of Crystal River, Florida and Homosassa Springs, Florida are famous the world over for the native manatee population. These endangered, prehistoric mammals have made the warm, natural spring waters of Citrus County their home during the cooler winter months.

Crystal River Fishing
Citrus County is very much a water sport area. There are seven rivers that criss cross the county including the Crystal River, the Homosassa River, the Chassahowitzka River, and the Withlacoochee River. There are numerous lakes including the Tsala Apopka Lake chain, Lake Rousseau and Lake Henderson.

Many of these rivers run into King's Bay which empties into the nearby Gulf of Mexico. As you can imagine, fishing in Citrus County is spectacular.

The brim and bass fishing in the lakes are unmatched especially at nearby Lake Rousseau. As for saltwater and deep sea fishing the red fish, trout, cobia, jacks and tarpon are plentiful. In fact, the world record tarpon was hooked and landed just off the coast of Citrus County.

Other activities in Citrus County include every kind of club, organization and civic group you can imagine as well as annual festivals including the Manatee FestivalChristmas ParadeHomosassa Seafood and Arts Festival, and the Cooter Festival in Inverness, Florida and the list goes on.

If you are looking for the idyllic Florida, adult, gated community with an active lifestyle, HERITAGE and Citrus County, Florida is the right combination for you!
